Santa Fe Fellows Workshop on Osteoporosis and Other Metabolic Bone Diseases

The Santa Fe Fellows Workshop on Osteoporosis and Other Metabolic Bone Diseases is a two-day interactive educational program for fellows. It will precede the 23rd Annual Santa Fe Bone Symposium under the direction of the Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico. Drs. Michael McClung, John Bilezikian, and Michael Lewiecki lead the Fellows’ workshop which covers a broad spectrum of topics, including basic principles of bone metabolism, fracture risk assessment, an update of therapeutic approaches to osteoporosis, new guidelines for evaluation and therapy of primary hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism, as well as rare skeletal disorders such as hypophosphatasia, hypophosphatemia, and osteogenesis imperfecta. Faculty are internationally recognized in their field. Fellows are encouraged to submit an abstract to be presented at the Workshop. Four fellows will be selected to give oral presentations of their abstracts during the Santa Fe Bone Symposium, August 4-5.
Workshop Format:The two-day interactive workshop features seventeen didactic lectures, two fellow abstract presentation sessions, and four discussion sessions for fellows and faculty to delve further into the presented topics. Breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided each day. All fellows who participate in the workshop are invited attend the 23rd Annual Santa Fe Bone Symposium August 4-5, 2023, in person or remotely, with complimentary registration due to a scholarship from the Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico.
Workshop Faculty:
The faculty’s expertise extends to all facets of our field. This includes bone cell biology, bone biomechanics, histomorphometry of bone, and mechanisms of calciotropic hormone action. Their insights into the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to osteoporosis, to other common and to rare metabolic bone diseases are at the forefront of the field, and in many instances, have been defined by their efforts.

Applications will open after the new year.
Eligibility:Directors of Postdoctoral Subspecialty Training Programs for MDs are invited to select individuals from their programs who meet the criteria and whose education would be enhanced by participating in this Workshop. The trainees can be from any subspecialties that deal with skeletal health (i.e., endocrinology, rheumatology, orthopedics, geriatrics, women’s health, etc.). The MD must be in an accredited, relevant specialty training program (1st, 2nd, or 3rd year)
Selected fellows will be notified in early May. They will receive travel support for their flight, and 3 nights hotel lodging. Fellows selected to present their abstracts at the Santa Fe Bone symposium will have their additional hotel lodging covered. Fellows staying on for the Santa Fe Bone Symposium but not presenting are responsibile for their additional hotel accommodations.
