Diabetes Preceptorship at Columbia University

College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY
The Preceptorial in Diabetes and Obesity, sponsored by the Endocrine Fellows Foundation, is conducted at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center. The faculty that typically conducts this Preceptorship in Diabetes and Obesity includes: Drs. John P. Bilezikian, Robin Goland, Domenico Accili, Natasha Leibel, Magdalena Bogun, Utpal Pajvani, Wendy Chung, Rudolph Leibel, Xavier Pi-Sunyer, Judith Korner, Blandine Laferrere, Tirissa Reid, Joseph Tenenbaum, Henry Ginsberg, Mishaela Rubin, Daniel Casper, Gerald Appel, Megan Sykes, and Dieter Egli.
The faculty engages in a vigorous clinical research program as well as in an active practice. The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center is the site for one of the country's largest programs of clinical trials in type 1 diabetes. These include TrialNet Type 1 Diabetes Pathway to Prevention, Immune Effects of Oral Insulin in Relatives at Risk for Type 1 Diabetes, CTLA-4 Ig for Prevention of Abnormal Glucose Tolerance in Relatives at Risk for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, and TUDCA: Clinical Investigation of Efficacy of Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid to Enhance Beta Cell Survival in Type 1 Diabetes by Reducing ER Stress. In addition, Berrie Center researchers participate in the GRADE Study (Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness), TODAY Study of Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescence and Youth, and Skin Biopsies for Generation of Disease-Specific Stem Cells. Faculty expertise also extends to more fundamental research initiatives, including beta-cell biology, insulin action and insulin resistance, the genetics of obesity, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, development of cell replacement therapies in diabetes, in vivo imaging of beta-cell mass, and modeling of autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes. Clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches used by the group are on the cutting edge of the field, and in many instances, have been defined by their efforts.
The fellows who are selected to participate in this program will gain experience in all these areas. Additionally, the preceptorial will consist of regular conferences replete with clinical case discussions, journal clubs, and research seminars. The preceptorial will also heavily emphasize the clinical approach to the patient with diabetes and obesity. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to a wide variety of clinical problems will be reviewed case by case with the fellow. During the one-week training period, there will be many opportunities to have discussions with many members of the faculty.
